A decade has passed since The Tragically Hip’s final performance in Kingston, Ontario, but Paul Langlois admits that he is still coming to terms with the experience. Reflecting on the event, Langlois, the guitarist for The Tragically Hip, expressed disbelief at the passage of time since their farewell show, emphasizing the impact their music had on fans.
The emotional evening saw Hip’s lead vocalist, Gord Downie, bidding farewell to a packed Rogers K-Rock Centre in Kingston, now known as Slush Puppi Place, while fans and Downie himself shed tears during poignant renditions of classics like “Ahead by a Century” and “Bobcaygeon.”
The iconic Canadian band, with a discography spanning 13 studio albums since their inception in 1984, concluded their touring career in 2016 with a memorable performance in their hometown on August 20, 2016. Downie’s battle with terminal brain cancer, diagnosed in December 2015, sadly led to his passing just over a year later at the age of 53.
In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of The Tragically Hip’s final show, CBC will be rebroadcasting the concert. The band members, reflecting on the significance of the event, expressed gratitude for the enduring support and love shown by fans, highlighting the profound impact of their music and the need to honor Downie’s memory.
Despite the band’s decision not to reunite, they recently released a new album titled “Live July 22 – August 20, 2016,” featuring recordings from their 2016 tour. Guitarist Rob Baker emphasized the healing power of music, recounting a conversation with Downie that underscored the therapeutic role of music in processing emotions and experiences.
Looking back, the band members acknowledged that they underestimated the magnitude of their final show’s impact, realizing only in the aftermath the profound connection it forged with audiences nationwide.
