“Trial Reveals Crypto ‘Genius’ Paid for Forbes Praise”

During the fraud and money laundering trial of Aiden Pleterski, three investors testified about how online articles featuring him influenced their investment decisions. These investors mentioned being swayed by a Forbes article that praised Pleterski as a genius and knowledgeable about cryptocurrency, with one investor recalling a photo of Pleterski on a private jet.

Despite the positive image portrayed in the article, it was later revealed that Pleterski had paid for the promotional piece. Several investors testified that this article was where they first encountered the moniker “the Crypto King.”

After hearing testimony from eight of Pleterski’s investors, it was disclosed that they collectively entrusted him with $1.9 million for trading purposes between 2021 and 2022. They all shared similar accounts of being lured into investing by Pleterski’s extravagant lifestyle and his personal guarantee of their investments.

Text messages presented in court between Pleterski and investors showed him reassuring them about the safety and security of their funds, despite delays in withdrawals. Pleterski, who is representing himself in the trial, has pleaded not guilty to charges of fraud over $5,000 and money laundering.

The prosecution alleges that Pleterski misappropriated investors’ funds for personal use, including purchasing luxury items such as exotic cars, private jet flights, and extravagant shopping sprees. His arrest in May 2024 followed a thorough investigation by Durham Regional Police and the Ontario Securities Commission.

The trial is set to resume on Friday morning as the case against Pleterski unfolds.
