Two convicted in Whistler double homicide trial

Two individuals have been convicted in a month-long jury trial for a double homicide that occurred in 2022 in Whistler, British Columbia, as confirmed by the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT). The jury verdict found Gursimran Sahota, aged 29, and Tanvir Khakh, aged 25, guilty of first-degree murder in the killing of Meninder Dhaliwal, aged 28. Sahota was additionally convicted of second-degree murder in connection with the death of Satindera Gill, aged 36. Prior to jury deliberations, Khakh was acquitted of involvement in Gill’s homicide as directed by the judge, according to IHIT.

The tragic event took place at approximately 12:19 p.m. PT on July 24, 2022, with reports of two men being shot in the 4300 block of Sundial Crescent in Whistler Village. Regrettably, one victim succumbed to injuries at the scene, while the other passed away after being taken to the hospital, as stated in the IHIT release. The investigation concluded that the shooting was a targeted incident linked to an ongoing gang conflict.

The trial concluded on September 25, leading to the conviction outcomes. In Canada, a first-degree murder conviction mandates a life sentence with no chance of parole for 25 years. Similarly, a second-degree murder conviction results in a life sentence. However, the jury recommended that Sahota serve 20 years before being eligible for parole, as disclosed by IHIT. A sentencing hearing is anticipated to take place in the upcoming weeks.
