“Universal Credit Recipients Face Delay in Payment Increase”

Millions of individuals receiving Universal Credit will experience a delay in receiving their increased payments, even though the rates are set to rise in April. The standard allowance for Universal Credit, which represents the entitlement before any deductions, will see an inflation-adjusted increase starting from April 13. Specifically, for single claimants over the age of 25, the monthly standard allowance will climb from £400.14 to £424.90. However, due to the arrears payment system of Universal Credit, beneficiaries will not see the raise reflected until June.

The enhanced rates will only impact Universal Credit assessment periods commencing on or after April 13. Since Universal Credit payments are disbursed a week after the conclusion of each assessment period, the new rates will take effect in June payments.

The assessment period is crucial in determining the Universal Credit amount based on earnings and deductions within that timeframe. Nearly eight million people in the UK currently claim Universal Credit. Eligibility for Universal Credit hinges on personal circumstances, including age, living arrangements, relationship status, income, savings, and sometimes, physical and mental health status.

For those who work, a taper rate is applied, reducing the maximum Universal Credit payment as earnings increase. This taper rate stands at 55%, resulting in a deduction of 55p from the maximum payment for every £1 earned. Some individuals are entitled to a “work allowance,” a predetermined sum that can be earned before Universal Credit starts decreasing. The work allowance amounts to £411 per month for those receiving housing assistance and £684 per month for those who do not.

Various categories like singles, couples, child amounts, limited capability for work, carer amount, and work allowances all play a role in determining Universal Credit payments. More detailed information on additional elements and deductions for Universal Credit payments can be located on the GOV.UK website.
