“Widower Who Froze Wife Finds New Love Amidst Controversy”

A man who preserved his deceased wife through cryogenic freezing has sparked discussion as it emerged that he is now in a new relationship.

Gui Junmin decided to freeze the body of his wife, Zhan Wenlian, as an expression of his love and commitment after she succumbed to lung cancer in 2017 at the age of 49. This made her the first person in China to undergo cryogenic preservation. He entered a 30-year agreement with the Shandong Yinfeng Life Science Research Institute to maintain her frozen body. Zhan’s freezing was done at no cost as the institute was seeking volunteers for testing the technology.

Junmin’s plan was to be reunited with Zhan after the contractual period, hoping that advancements in medical treatments would nullify her terminal cancer diagnosis.

Since 2017, Zhan’s body has been stored in a 2,000-liter container at the institute in -190C liquid nitrogen. Reports from Chinese media indicate that Junmin remained single for the first two years post his wife’s demise. However, struggling with loneliness, he eventually concluded that living alone was challenging.

Junmin shared with the Chinese newspaper Southern Weekly that a severe gout episode, which immobilized him for two days, prompted him to rethink his situation. He expressed that being alone during such emergencies was concerning, emphasizing the vulnerability of living solo.

Shortly after, Junmin was introduced to Wang Chunxia, his current girlfriend, through a mutual acquaintance. He described their relationship to the paper as primarily practical, stating that she had not yet occupied a place in his heart. Junmin acknowledged his responsibility towards Chunxia but acknowledged the complexity of his emotional state.

He clarified that Wang Chunxia could never replace his late wife, emphasizing the importance of not forgetting the past while moving forward in life. Presently, Chunxia primarily assists him due to his medical condition following coronary stent surgery.

Responding to criticisms of ’emotional polygamy’ from readers, Junmin expressed his readiness for public scrutiny. He asserted his clear conscience and acceptance of potential backlash, indicating his preparedness for media attention.

The situation has stirred discussions on Chinese social media platforms. While some pondered the implications of potential scenarios in the future, others empathized with Junmin’s decision, emphasizing the necessity of continuing to live despite past tragedies.
