Hellebuyck, a distinguished player with three Vezina Trophy wins and the 2025 Hart Trophy for NHL MVP, had made a trade request public on August 27. Through a statement shared by his agent, Ray Petkau, Hellebuyck revealed that he had privately sought a trade “several months ago” and had allowed time for the team to handle it discreetly and respectfully.
Expressing gratitude for his time in Winnipeg, Hellebuyck emphasized his longstanding connection with the city since being drafted in 2012. Cheveldayoff had previously acknowledged considering offers for Hellebuyck before the NHL draft in June but had not confirmed the goaltender’s trade request at that time.
