The World Nomad Games, a celebration of traditional nomadic sports and culture, are currently taking place in Kyrgyzstan. Athletes representing 104 countries are participating in the games, highlighting the sports of the Turkic peoples of Central Asia. The events, which commenced earlier this week, are set to conclude on Sunday.
The venue at Kyrchyn Gorge, located approximately 314 kilometers east of the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek, has been bustling with participants and spectators throughout the 6th edition of the Games. Participants have been seen parading with golden eagles, showcasing their skills with hunting birds, and engaging in various competitions, including the traditional equestrian discipline of “tyiyn enmei” where riders must gallop at speed to pick up coins from the ground while mounted.
Among the captivating events, horse riders from teams representing Uzbekistan and Russia have been competing in the ancient Central Asian sports of “kok-boru” (gray wolf) or “buzkashi” (goat grabbing), where mounted players vie for points by tossing the carcass of a headless goat into a well. Additionally, archery competitions have been a highlight, with participants demonstrating their accuracy with bows and arrows.
Beyond the competitions, spectators have been enjoying the diverse culinary offerings and admiring the craftsmanship skills on display. Kyrgyz women have particularly impressed onlookers with their talent in spooling wool, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the region. The Games offer a unique blend of traditional sports, cultural displays, and communal festivities, providing a platform for participants and visitors to experience the essence of nomadic traditions.
