Yellowknife’s two education boards have revealed the names of trustees elected during the recent municipal election. Yellowknife Catholic Schools (YCS) and Yellowknife Education District No. 1 (YK1) each have seven members on their boards.
YK1 announced the successful candidates as Jillian Bancroft, Barbara Bell, Stacy Ridgely, Allan Shortt, Billie-Jean Smith, Brianna Spicer, and Spencer Tracy. The new YK1 board will be inaugurated on Nov. 2 at 12:10 p.m. at the YK1 district office.
Yellowknife Catholic Schools provided a breakdown of their election results. The winning trustees are Tina Schauerte with 668 votes, Matthew Yap with 648 votes, Susan Waddell with 547 votes, Sara Flaherty with 510 votes, Melanie Williams with 448 votes, Megan Richards with 411 votes, and Alex Mulooki with 362 votes.
The YCS expressed gratitude to all candidates for their commitment to Catholic education and the mission of serving students and families. Trustees play a crucial role in overseeing the school board’s governance, including budget approval and the hiring of the superintendent.
It is worth noting that trustees do not need to have a child attending a school within the board to serve as trustees. This election marked the first time Elections N.W.T. was involved in conducting school board elections.
