“Yukon Residents Urged to Embrace Plug-In Solar Amid Rising Energy Costs”

Amid a substantial 34% increase in electricity rates, the Yukon Conservation Society is urging Yukon residents to take control of their energy production. The non-profit organization has turned to social media to promote the use of plug-in solar panels, a technology gaining popularity due to escalating energy expenses. Although plug-in solar panels are currently prohibited in Canada due to the absence of formal standards and reluctance from provinces, territories, and utilities.

Sebastian Jones, a fish, wildlife, and habitat analyst at the Yukon Conservation Society, expressed that many individuals are frustrated by escalating utility bills and disheartened by the Yukon government’s indefinite suspension of the microgeneration program. According to Jones, acquiring solar panels and an inverter from retailers like Canadian Tire and connecting them to a dedicated circuit allows individuals to swiftly set up their own solar energy system.

The territory ceased issuing permits for connecting home solar panels in 2023 after these devices began causing disruptions to the electrical grid. Yukon Energy faced challenges in managing rapid solar fluctuations caused by weather changes. While the utility company has not taken steps to update the grid to accommodate solar power, Jones views plug-in solar as a temporary solution that does not necessitate complex installation procedures.

Wayne Potoroka from Yukon’s Community Services department highlighted that utilizing uncertified electrical equipment like plug-in solar panels is not permitted in Canada. Yukon Energy refrains from taking a stance on plug-in solar owing to its current prohibition.

Former Yukon Energy senior engineer John Maissen expressed concerns about potential electrical hazards and circuit problems if individuals were to directly connect solar systems to their home outlets. However, he remains optimistic about the future of renewable energy in the region, suggesting that employing batteries could help manage excess energy and stabilize the grid amid solar power fluctuations.

A grid-scale battery project is in progress, with the Whitehorse battery project nearing completion as of April this year. Jones, inspired by Germany’s “guerrilla solar” movement, believes that embracing similar initiatives can compel the government to adapt swiftly to accommodate multiple energy sources on the Yukon grid.

The concept of “balcony solar” originated in Germany, where a grassroots solar movement advocated for the use of plug-in panels to reduce energy costs for renters lacking roof access. Following this trend, Utah became the first U.S. state to legalize plug-in solar, reflecting a broader shift towards solar energy. Additional states have since followed suit, legalizing plug-in solar technology.

Advocacy efforts in Canada, spearheaded by the Calgary Climate Hub, aim to promote plug-in solar and enable broader participation in the energy transition. While there is growing interest in plug-in solar globally, Vipond emphasized the need for legal frameworks that prioritize safety standards. Vipond believes that time is necessary for legislators and utilities to align with public sentiment, highlighting the widespread excitement surrounding this emerging technology.
