Frank Beard, the drummer of the renowned Texas boogie-rock band ZZ Top, known for his rhythmic contributions to hit songs like “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs,” and “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” has passed away at the age of 77. Publicist Bob Merlis confirmed that Beard, who was receiving hospice care, died on Tuesday at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, surrounded by his family.
In a tribute to his longtime bandmate, ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons, currently on tour with bassist Elwood Francis, expressed deep sorrow at the loss. Gibbons praised Beard as a naturally innovative drummer and a true Texan, emphasizing the vital role Beard’s backbeat played in maintaining ZZ Top’s success over the past six decades.
With over 50 million albums sold, ZZ Top earned six No. 1 singles on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart and secured seven Top 10 spots on the Billboard 200 with their albums. The band also received three Grammy Award nominations for their exceptional musical achievements.
In the documentary “ZZ Top: That Little Ol’ Band from Texas” released in 2019, Beard reflected on his musical journey, stating, “I’ve found the people I was meant to play with. I never wanted to quit and never wanted to get fired.”
Throughout his illustrious career, Beard stood behind ZZ Top members Dusty Hill and Billy Gibbons, showcasing his talent on the drums. One memorable performance was at the 2016 Glastonbury Festival in England, where the band mesmerized the audience with their iconic music.
