“1.16 Billion NHS Prescriptions Dispensed in England, Costs Covered for Eligible Groups”

A wide range of individuals in the UK may qualify to receive their prescriptions at no charge through the National Health Service (NHS). Recent data from the NHS Business Services Authority (BSA) reveals that community pharmacies in England dispensed 1.16 billion prescriptions in the 2024/25 period, marking a 4% increase from the previous year and continuing a trend of four consecutive years of rising prescription numbers.

While some individuals may receive prescriptions through the NHS, they may still need to cover the costs based on their personal circumstances. However, many people in the UK could potentially obtain their prescriptions without any payment for various reasons. It is important to note that patients need to confirm their eligibility to claim free prescriptions, as emphasized by guidance from the NHSBSA.

The NHS outlines specific groups eligible for free prescriptions, including individuals who claim certain benefits or are under 20 and dependents of claimants. Additionally, individuals with specific medical conditions can qualify for NHS prescriptions through medical exemption certificates, which grant them free prescriptions. To obtain a medical exemption certificate, patients should request a form from their doctor, complete it, and have their GP verify eligibility by signing the form.

Once the NHSBSA receives the application form, the certificate becomes valid one month prior to that date and remains valid for five years, requiring renewal afterward. To check eligibility for a free prescription, individuals can visit the NHS website for further information and guidance.
