Anthony Joshua has made a return to the boxing gym almost three weeks after being involved in a fatal car accident in Nigeria. The former two-time heavyweight champion was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that crashed into a stationary truck near Lagos, resulting in the tragic deaths of two of his close friends and teammates, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. Their funerals were held in London on January 4.
During his visit to Nigeria for a holiday and family reunion, Joshua had recently defeated YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul before the car crash. Following the incident, Joshua received medical treatment in the hospital before being discharged on New Year’s Eve. Speculations arose regarding his future in boxing.
Despite the rumors, Joshua shared images on Snapchat showing him back in the gym, engaging in workouts and pad hitting sessions as part of his “mental strength therapy.” He was also seen doing lower leg exercises, using a stationary bike, and swimming in a pool. Additionally, he posted pictures reflecting his dedication to training and past accomplishments in the ring.
Joshua’s uncle claimed on January 6 that the boxer had privately informed his family of his decision to retire from boxing due to the car crash. However, Mirror Fighting reports that Joshua has not officially announced his retirement yet.
The driver of the car, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, who was charged in connection with the crash, was granted bail by the Ogun State Police Command. Reports emerged that Joshua narrowly escaped the accident as he had initially been seated in the front of the vehicle before being asked to move to the back by the driver. It is expected that Joshua will take time to grieve and consider his next steps.
Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, emphasized the need for Joshua to have time to recover emotionally and physically before making any decisions about his boxing career. Hearn expressed his belief that Joshua may eventually return to the ring but stressed that the ultimate decision lies with Joshua himself. He highlighted the emotional toll the incident has taken on everyone involved and the importance of allowing Joshua the space and time he needs to heal and decide his future in the sport.
