“Cork Man Charged with Mother’s Murder”

A 25-year-old man from Cork is facing charges for allegedly killing his mother and assaulting his father. David Gallagher, residing in Shrewsbury Downs, Ballinlough, appeared in Cork District Court following an incident on Monday night. Authorities responded to a stabbing at the Gallagher family home on Monday evening.

The accused, David Gallagher, was charged with the murder of his mother, Stella Gallagher, aged 59, and with causing harm to his father, Brian Gallagher, aged 63, both incidents occurring at their residence on the same night. Stella Gallagher was taken to Cork University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. She had a career as a chemical engineer at Eli Lilly in Cork.

During the court proceedings, Detective Sergeant Niall Hayes from Blackrock Garda Station presented evidence of the arrest, charge, and caution of David Gallagher. The accused remained silent when the charges were formally brought against him. Gallagher had been held for questioning at Bridewell Garda Station.

Sergeant John Kelleher mentioned that the police would request a remand in custody at Cork District Court on November 26, as bail is typically not granted for murder charges at the district court level. Defense solicitor Shane Collins Daly sought and was granted free legal aid for Gallagher, who is currently unemployed. The solicitor highlighted that Gallagher had received medical attention regularly while in custody and requested urgent medical and psychiatric evaluations upon his arrival at Cork Prison.

Judge John King approved the request for medical evaluations and ordered that Gallagher receive necessary medical care while in prison. The judge remanded Gallagher in custody to appear at Cork District Court via video link on November 26.
