Jamie McDonald, a remarkable individual, has achieved incredible feats in his fundraising efforts, including completing 210 marathons, a 5,000-mile run from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast, and a 14,000-mile cycling journey from Bangkok to Gloucester. Through these extreme challenges, he has raised an impressive £1 million for charity.
Born with syringomyelia and facing various health issues in his early years, Jamie, now 39, has launched a new charity called Ward Buddies to provide companionship and emotional support to children in hospitals. Overcoming his own health struggles, Jamie embarked on fundraising endeavors, such as cycling back home from Bangkok and running 5,500 miles across America, visiting numerous children’s hospitals along the way.
Notably, Jamie holds world records for spending the longest time on a static bike and covering the most miles on a treadmill within seven days. His latest initiative, Ward Buddies, aims to address the emotional needs of young patients during their hospital stays, ensuring they do not feel alone.
Expressing the importance of Ward Buddies, Jamie emphasizes the impact of companionship on children’s recovery, highlighting that many children endure extended periods without visits from loved ones. With a team of 25 active volunteers and successful pilot programs at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, Ward Buddies aims to expand its services nationwide with the support of donations.
To further raise awareness and support for Ward Buddies, a campaign video has been released, encouraging contributions to help alleviate the emotional distress young patients face during hospitalization. The charity envisions a future where no child feels abandoned in a hospital, and every donation, regardless of size, plays a significant role in achieving this mission.
