Co-op is set to introduce innovative “flexi checkouts” in stores to reduce waiting times for customers. These smart tills, provided by American company Diebold Nixdorf, can switch between self-service and cashier-operated modes based on customer preference. The aim is to enhance convenience and efficiency for shoppers. By April, 150 Co-op stores will feature these new checkouts.
Apart from the flexibility to switch modes, the checkout screens will display price discounts, promotions, and potential future services like parcel collections. Co-op proudly claims to be the first supermarket in the UK to implement this technology.
David Tyas, Co-op’s head of operations, support center, and innovation, emphasized the company’s commitment to local communities by offering a mix of traditional service from store staff and quick, automated transactions. The latest checkout technology reflects Co-op’s dedication to enhancing the shopping experience for all customers.
In related news, Co-op announced the opening of 18 new or revamped stores in the first quarter of 2026. The inaugural store for the year is situated in Willowbrook Park, Didcot, Oxfordshire, as part of a new neighborhood development. Additionally, some stores are undergoing renovations, including the convenience store in Eastern Green, Coventry, and a franchise-operated location in Ealing, London.
Kate McCrae, Co-op Operations Director, highlighted the company’s focus on providing quality products, value, and a pleasant shopping experience for members and customers. The expansion of store openings in 2026 aims to strengthen Co-op’s presence across the UK.
Co-op has also unveiled plans to create thousands of new apprenticeships in the coming years. Through its Levy Share service, the retail giant will invest £70 million to establish 7,000 matched apprenticeships by 2030, contributing to workforce development and growth opportunities.
