Ricky Hatton, the late boxing star, was discovered deceased at his residence in Manchester, with injuries indicating a possible hanging incident, as per a pathologist’s report. The cause of death was officially recorded as “hanging” during the inquest, which also revealed no signs of suspicious circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Family and close associates, including friends, father Ray, brother Matthew, and former partner Jennifer Dooley, gathered at Stockport coroner’s court for the inquiry into Hatton’s passing. The former world champion, aged 46, was found at his £1.7 million Hyde home in Greater Manchester on September 14 last year.
The investigation disclosed that Hatton was last seen alive by family members on September 12 and was reported to be in good spirits. However, he failed to attend a scheduled event the following day, prompting his manager to visit his home on September 14, where the tragic discovery was made.
The coroner, Alison Mutch, stated that despite evidence of chronic traumatic encephalopathy and alcohol influence, there was no conclusive indication that Hatton had intended to end his own life. She delivered a narrative verdict, highlighting Hatton’s significant future plans and the absence of any suicide notes.
The inquest also revealed that Hatton, known for his boxing prowess, had been suffering from degenerative brain disease, specifically chronic traumatic encephalopathy associated with repetitive head injuries common in boxers. The coroner emphasized Hatton’s strong bond with his family, describing him as a devoted father and highlighting the grief his loved ones continue to experience.
The findings also indicated that Hatton had been out with his daughters and granddaughter shortly before his passing, appearing normal and expressing excitement about future plans. Despite struggles with alcohol and drugs in the past, his family believed he was in a positive state of mind and had no intentions of taking his own life.
