Sir Mo Farah has made a permanent move with his family from the UK to Qatar, despite the ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Farah, a four-time Olympic gold medalist, shifted his residency to Doha, the capital of Qatar, after retiring from running. He and his wife Tania, along with their four children, now call Qatar their permanent home.
According to The Sun, Farah has officially changed his residential status from the UK to Qatar in documentation for his company, which boasts assets of £3.9 million and paid £375,000 in tax and VAT in 2023. By relocating to Qatar, Farah will be exempt from tax obligations.
This move comes amidst the turmoil in the Middle East, particularly the conflict involving Israel, the United States, and Iran. Qatar has been impacted by the unrest, with Iran targeting the country’s energy facilities using drones.
While over 100,000 Brits have returned to the UK from the Middle East due to the ongoing war, Farah and his family have decided to remain in Qatar. Despite having a home in Weybridge, Surrey, they have chosen to stay in Qatar to provide a safer environment for their children away from the turbulent global events.
Farah, who originally hails from Somalia and spent time in the UK and the US during his athletic career, emphasized that the move to Qatar was driven by the desire for his children to grow up away from the spotlight of fame and to enjoy a more peaceful upbringing.
In an interview with The National, Farah expressed his contentment with the decision, stating that spending quality time with his family after retiring from running was a priority. He highlighted the ease of living in Qatar, which allows him to be with his family and continue his work remotely, supporting his children in their endeavors.
