“Aldi Declared Most Cost-Effective Supermarket by Which?”

Aldi has been recognized once more as the most cost-effective supermarket this month, as per the recent price comparison conducted by Which?. The analysis compared prices of a set shopping list comprising 89 items in February. The average cost at Aldi stood at £161.56 throughout the month.

Lidl followed closely behind, with its list costing £162.75, just £1.19 more expensive than Aldi. Asda secured the third spot at £181.06, trailed by Tesco with a Clubcard at £181.58. The shopping list included a mix of branded and own-brand items like Birds Eye Peas, Hovis bread, milk, and butter.

For a smaller item list this month, Waitrose emerged as the priciest supermarket, averaging £217.02, significantly higher than Aldi by £55.46.

In a separate comparison for a longer list of 225 items, Tesco stood out as the most budget-friendly option for Clubcard members, with the shop costing £580.35. This price was £3.97 lower than Asda’s total of £584.32. Without a Clubcard, the same shop at Tesco tallied £629.25, an additional £48.90. Notably, Aldi and Lidl were excluded from this comparison due to their narrower product range.

Waitrose also appeared as the most expensive on average, with the larger shop totaling £650.11, marking a £69.76 difference compared to Tesco with a Clubcard. The analysis factored in special offer prices and loyalty discounts where applicable but excluded multibuys.

Reena Sewraz, Retail Editor at Which?, commented on the findings, highlighting Aldi’s lead and the ongoing competition between discounters. Sewraz also noted Tesco’s value for branded products through Clubcard savings and expressed anticipation for broader accessibility to these benefits.

The analysis underscores the potential savings of being selective in where one shops, potentially saving hundreds of pounds annually amid enduring budget constraints.
