A recent report by consumer advocate Which? reveals that several major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations for reliable service. Smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing the industry giants by offering faster speeds, more reliable connections, and better value.
The study highlights that internet connection issues, such as frequent dropouts, have become commonplace rather than rare. Consumers often express frustration over slow download speeds and service disruptions.
An overwhelming 91% of broadband users reported encountering problems with their service in the past year, indicating that fewer than one in ten households have experienced trouble-free connectivity.
Sky emerged as the worst performer among leading providers, with 38% of customers experiencing frequent dropouts. Virgin Media also struggled, with 30% of users facing regular connection issues despite paying premium prices. Additionally, a quarter of Virgin Media customers complained about slow download speeds.
Notably, Sky customers expressed dissatisfaction with the speed of their broadband service. Other underperforming providers include TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service.
In contrast, smaller UK providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic have excelled in providing reliable service, outperforming major brands. Plusnet stood out among larger providers, surpassing rivals such as Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.
Consistent with previous research, Which? emphasizes that smaller broadband companies consistently outperform major providers in terms of reliability, customer service, and value for money.
Which? encourages households to explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if they are dissatisfied with their current service. Utilizing Ofcom’s broadband checker can help consumers identify available networks.
The report also includes a list of top performers and underperformers based on customer ratings. Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasizes the importance of quality broadband service and urges customers to explore competitive deals and switch providers if needed.
Responding to the report, a Virgin Media spokesperson highlighted the company’s ongoing investment in service improvements and its positive performance in official data and independent assessments.
The findings underscore the growing influence of consumers in shaping the broadband market by choosing providers that prioritize quality service and customer satisfaction.
