“Graphic Journalist and Daughter Win Musical Whistling Titles”

Ben Shannon, a graphic journalist at CBC and a proud dad living in Toronto, shared his experience participating in an unexpected journey to the Masters of Musical Whistling competition in Los Angeles with his daughter, Sumire. Initially signing up for the contest as a lighthearted activity, Shannon and Sumire found themselves taking the competition more seriously after receiving feedback from Carole Anne Kaufman, also known as the Whistling Diva, urging them to hone their skills for a live audience.

Following dedicated practice sessions and guidance from Kaufman, Shannon and Sumire made their way to Los Angeles for the competition. Surrounded by talented whistlers from around the globe, they marveled at the diverse performances and skills displayed by fellow contestants. Despite Shannon’s initial ironic outlook on life, the experience of competing alongside his daughter and witnessing her success in the children’s category, as well as his own win in the level one adults category, brought a newfound appreciation for earnest dedication and passion.

Reflecting on the journey, Shannon acknowledged the importance of embracing genuine care and passion, even if it may seem unconventional or vulnerable. The competition served as a reminder that sometimes, letting go of irony and embracing sincerity can lead to unexpected personal growth and fulfillment.
