“Food Blogger Deb Perelman Battles AI Summaries”

Deb Perelman has experienced significant transformations on the internet. Celebrating its 20th anniversary this summer, the renowned food blogger’s website, Smitten Kitchen, has attracted a loyal following. Perelman’s approach has always been to engage with her audience across various social media platforms, such as Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok, while directing them back to her website for recipes and stories. However, she now confronts a new dilemma: AI-generated summaries.

Perelman expressed astonishment at encountering her own recipe content summarized in AI-generated search result snippets without her consent. This development has prompted her to seek protections to limit AI’s impact on her website.

Google recently introduced “AI Mode” in its search functionality, revolutionizing the user experience with conversational interactions akin to AI chatbots like ChatGPT. This feature, boasting over a billion monthly users, prioritizes comprehensive AI summaries over direct website links, enabling users to obtain answers without leaving Google’s platform.

As the digital landscape shifts towards accommodating information-seeking bots, creators reliant on human traffic face significant challenges. The internet is undergoing a fundamental reorientation to cater to bots that extract data from websites.

The decline in human web traffic is evident across various sectors, including retail, software, IT, and finance websites, according to data from Cloudflare. Hamzah Khadim, co-founder of Logik Digital, emphasizes the shift in search algorithms from keywords to conversations, emphasizing the importance of websites becoming part of AI responses. Logik Digital’s focus now extends beyond traditional SEO to GEO (generative engine optimization), incorporating detailed content to establish credibility and address anticipated user queries.

While many content creators leverage social media for monetization, websites often rely on ad revenue or subscriptions to sustain content creation. Mark Surman from Mozilla raises concerns about the potential consequences of AI-dominated web traffic on original content creation. Even for publishers willing to share content with AI for free, the costs associated with AI-driven web scraping are significant.

Wikimedia Enterprise, responsible for disseminating Wikipedia content, collaborates with AI companies like Google and Microsoft to offset the costs of providing data to bots. As media companies consider strategies to combat declining web traffic, the preservation of an open web ecosystem remains a focal point.

Deb Perelman underscores the unique value of individual perspectives in content creation, emphasizing that AI summaries lack the context and depth that creators offer. The essence of a recipe, she argues, cannot be fully captured in a brief AI-generated snippet extracted from the original content.
