The initial debate in the Ontario Liberals’ leadership contest kicked off on Monday evening, highlighting a noticeable split between those with and without advantages. During the 90-minute discussion, the five contenders presented their thoughts on healthcare, education, and affordability, showcasing both differing and overlapping perspectives as they vie to lead the party. One particular area of contention among the candidates was whether the future leader must hold a legislative seat. In November, Liberal members will choose the party’s fourth leader since 2018, when the Liberals were last in power. The past two leaders, Steven Del Duca and Bonnie Crombie, did not hold legislative seats, leading the party to remain in third place after the 2022 and 2025 elections. Lee Fairclough and Stephanie Bowman, both caucus members, emphasized the importance of this aspect, while Eric Lombardi and Dylan Marando, two other candidates, argued that voters prioritize other qualities in a leader. Navdeep Bains, a former federal cabinet minister, avoided directly addressing the necessity of a legislative seat, highlighting the need for change and a fresh direction. The new party leader is scheduled to be revealed on November 21, following online voting from November 9 to 20. The debate, held in a Brampton studio, was live-streamed and moderated by Tina Yazdani, a Queen’s Park reporter for The Trillium. Interim Ontario Liberal Party leader John Fraser expressed the party’s aim to provide an alternative for Ontarians and introduce the candidates to a broader audience.
