Liberal MP Shaun Chen has announced his resignation at the conclusion of this week due to persistent health issues stemming from a car accident he experienced late last year. Representing Scarborough North since 2015, Chen disclosed in a social media statement on Monday that the accident had led to substantial health complications, limiting his ability to fulfill parliamentary duties in Ottawa.
“After careful deliberation with my family, I have made the decision to step down from my position as a Member of Parliament,” stated Chen. Prior to his parliamentary tenure, Chen held the role of Toronto District School Board chair.
Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed gratitude towards Chen for his efforts in advocating for youth and combating racism. Carney extended well wishes for Chen’s recovery and future endeavors, affirming confidence in Chen’s continued positive impact.
Chen’s resignation adds to the growing count of MPs departing their roles this summer. Former Liberal cabinet minister Steven Guilbeault and Conservative MP Cathay Wagantall are among those scheduled to vacate their seats soon. Additionally, Conservative MP Larry Brock is set to step down in mid-September for a new role at the Brantford Crown attorney’s office, while NDP MP Alexandre Boulerice plans to pursue provincial office with Québec Solidaire this October.
Chen has indicated his resignation will take effect on Saturday.
