Five Iranian officials are set to face sanctions for their involvement in activities that undermine international peace in the Strait of Hormuz, as stated by Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister. The minister emphasized the importance of freedom of navigation in the strait for global trade and energy security. The targeted individuals, including high-ranking members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), have been identified for posing threats to international waterway security.
The sanctioned officials are Ali Abdollahi, the commander of Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters and a senior IRGC official; Lt.-Col. Ebrahim Zolfaghari, a spokesperson for Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters; Ebrahim Azizi, a parliamentarian and head of the Iranian parliament’s national security and foreign policy committee; Shahram Irani, the commander of Artesh, Iran’s navy; and Hamid Hosseini, the chair of the board of directors and spokesperson for the Iranian Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Products Exporters Union.
Canada has now imposed sanctions on a total of 232 individuals and 260 entities across Iran’s security, intelligence, and economic sectors, according to Global Affairs Canada. These actions come amidst increasing pressure to resolve the conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran, as efforts to finalize a peace agreement have so far been unsuccessful.
The ongoing war, which started in February following a joint U.S.-Israeli attack on Iran, has led to fluctuating statements from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding the possibility of a peace deal. Iran has been using control over the strait as a bargaining tool, impacting global oil and natural gas shipment routes. Calls for allies to help secure the waterway have intensified, with Canada and other countries urging Iran to cease disruptions in the region.
Trump’s administration has expressed readiness to maintain a naval presence in the area to enforce the blockade on Iran, despite criticisms from some allies over the handling of the conflict. With rising fuel prices affecting public opinion and the global economy, there is mounting pressure on Trump to bring an end to the war.
