Toronto Hydro has successfully restored power to thousands of residents in the east end and parts of downtown Toronto following an outage that lasted over an hour on Wednesday night. The utility confirmed the restoration of power at 10:30 p.m. through a social media update, expressing apologies for the disruption caused and thanking customers and the community for their patience.
Approximately 31,000 customers were impacted by the outage, as indicated on Toronto Hydro’s outage map at 9:40 p.m. The widespread outage was attributed to a loss of supply from Hydro One, according to Toronto Hydro.
During the outage, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) noted disruptions to elevators and escalators at several Line 2 subway stations. Additionally, Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) reported power failures at multiple buildings, prompting immediate evacuation or avoidance of the affected areas.
Specifically, power outages were observed at Eric Palin Hall, Sally Horsfall Eaton Centre for Studies in Community Health, Rogers Communications Centre, Pitman Hall, International Living/Learning Centre, and Kerr Hall at the Toronto Campus. TMU emphasized the need for evacuation due to potential safety system risks, including fire detection and sprinklers.
TMU instructed a temporary pause in classes, labs, and exams during the evacuation period, with employees advised to seek alternative work locations or take breaks nearby until power was fully restored.
