Nova Scotia Parks has issued advisories cautioning against swimming at Rainbow Haven Beach and Lawrencetown Beach due to elevated bacteria levels. The advisories, released recently, deem the water at both beaches unsafe for swimming, potentially causing illnesses. Lifeguards stationed at the beaches are informing visitors to refrain from swimming.
Water tests conducted at Rainbow Haven Beach and Lawrencetown Beach revealed bacteria levels exceeding the acceptable limit set by the Department of Environment and Climate Change. Paul D’Eon, the Nova Scotia Lifeguard Service director, mentioned that samples were taken early Friday, with lab results expected by Monday. He stated that the advisory will continue through the weekend.
D’Eon highlighted the presence of elevated levels of enterococci, a saltwater bacteria similar to E. coli found in freshwater sources. While the beaches remain open for shoreline walks, visitors are urged not to swim despite lifeguards being present.
“For those seeking safe swimming locations over the weekend, beaches like Martinique, Queensland, and Bayswater have tested normal and are suitable,” D’Eon added.
