Charlie Rousseau, a resident of Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, faced an accessibility challenge during a visit to her hometown for a festival. She encountered traditional parking meters that required coins, which she struggled to operate due to limb differences affecting her arms and hands. Despite knowing that several other municipalities in Quebec offer free parking for individuals with accessible permits, she decided to take a chance.
Upon returning to her car, which is specially adapted for her, she discovered a $40 parking ticket for not paying the meter. In response, Rousseau, a social media influencer who often raises awareness about disabilities, filmed a video showcasing the difficulties she faced with the meters. The video, posted on June 20, quickly went viral, garnering over 730,000 views and sparking conversations around accessibility.
In the video, Rousseau expressed her intention to contest the ticket at city hall, emphasizing the importance of advocating for people with disabilities. Following the video’s widespread impact, Rouyn-Noranda Mayor Gilles Chapadeau reached out to Rousseau and met with her to address the issue. While decisions regarding parking policies lie with the city council, Chapadeau pledged to advocate for reviewing the matter and acknowledged the significance of ensuring accessibility for all.
Steven Laperrière, from the advocacy group RAPLIQ, commended Rousseau for shedding light on accessibility challenges in Quebec. While emphasizing the need for inclusive infrastructure from the start, Laperrière highlighted ongoing barriers faced by individuals with disabilities, such as poorly designed electric vehicle charging stations and exclusionary technology.
Despite not claiming an official spokesperson role, Rousseau, through her social media platform, continues to advocate for disability rights and systemic change. She aims to empower individuals with disabilities and promote independent mobility in a world where accessibility remains a pressing issue. Rousseau’s efforts reflect a broader push for inclusivity and understanding in society.
