At the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, teams from 10 regions are participating, with one region adding an international flair to the provincial event. The French territories of St. Pierre and Miquelon, situated off Newfoundland’s south coast, have sent boys and girls soccer teams to compete in Corner Brook for the Games.
The boys’ team kicked off their tournament on Thursday with a close 1-0 loss to Team Eastern. Soccer holds significant importance in St. Pierre, and players view the opportunity to compete in Newfoundland as a valuable experience that broadens their horizons.
Fifteen-year-old Arthur Champdoizeau expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We don’t face much competition in St. Pierre. Coming to Corner Brook for the N.L. Games is a fantastic opportunity for us and my team.” Similarly, Antony Cronsteadt, aged 14, highlighted that the island’s three minor soccer teams have united for the tournament, emphasizing the novelty and excitement of the experience.
Team manager Guillaume Grasset emphasized the significance of events like the N.L. Games in player development, fostering new friendships, and creating lasting memories beyond their island borders. The Games’ closing ceremonies are scheduled for Saturday, offering a platform for camaraderie and celebration among participants.
