Record attendance is anticipated as numerous municipal representatives gather in Ottawa for the annual conference hosted by the Association of Municipalities of Ontario (AMO) this week. Local leaders are set to advocate for consistent funding and increased support in addressing pressing issues such as homelessness and deteriorating infrastructure.
The event brings together delegates from urban, suburban, and rural areas to engage in policy discussions and hold direct meetings with provincial ministers. Taking place at Ottawa’s Rogers Centre, this year’s conference commences on Sunday and concludes on Wednesday, with Premier Doug Ford slated to speak to attendees on Monday morning.
AMO is emphasizing the escalating challenges municipalities encounter in delivering services and developing infrastructure. Outgoing AMO president Robin Jones emphasized the ongoing need for sustained funding for housing and economic infrastructure, in addition to urging the government to fully finance health and social services falling under provincial jurisdiction.
Jones pointed out that municipalities have experienced a significant transfer of costs in recent years, primarily relying on property taxes to cover most expenses. AMO’s projection indicates a requirement of over $250 billion in infrastructure investments within the next decade to accommodate growth, address climate change, and sustain aging transportation networks, water systems, and other essential assets statewide.
Delegates are advocating for increased provincial funding specifically allocated for community housing, mental health services, and addiction support, estimating an $11 billion necessity over the next decade to eradicate chronic homelessness. With this year’s conference coinciding with an election season, there is an added political element as mayors and council members engage with the public and gear up for the upcoming elections in October.
Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe is also slated to address conference attendees on Monday morning, preceding Premier Ford. Jones, stepping down as AMO president and handing over responsibilities to Ottawa Coun. Riley Brockington, will also deliver remarks during the event.
