“Tumbler Ridge Secondary School Demolition Underway”

In northeastern British Columbia, authorities have announced the commencement of the removal of the exterior of Tumbler Ridge Secondary School starting next week. The school was the site of a tragic incident on February 10 when five children and one education assistant lost their lives in one of Canada’s most devastating mass shootings.

Over the past few weeks, crews have been relocating the school’s contents using covered trucks in preparation for its physical demolition. Superintendent Christy Fennell of School District 59 expressed that this phase marks a significant step in the meticulous dismantling of the existing school, a process expected to span a few more weeks. Following the removal of the structure, efforts will continue into the autumn to restore the site to its original state with grass.

The school district has outlined that the deconstruction will be carried out in phases to minimize disruptions, with demolition waste being transported to regional landfills to maintain privacy and safeguard the community. Meanwhile, plans are in place for the construction of a new school at a different location, as announced by Premier David Eby in May. Both federal and provincial governments have allocated $200 million towards the development of the new school and enhancements to the local health center.

Tumbler Ridge, a community of approximately 2,400 residents, was home to around 160 students from Grades 7 to 12 at the secondary school, which also housed a college campus. Since the tragic event, temporary modular classrooms have been installed at the nearby elementary school, with additional facilities such as washrooms, offices, counseling spaces, and a communal area being introduced for the upcoming school year.

Looking ahead, the school district plans to engage students and residents in discussions regarding the conceptual designs for the new secondary school.
