“Israeli Strikes in Lebanon Raise Wildfire Allegations”

LISTEN | FRONT BURNER:

Over the weekend, Israeli airstrikes caused the death of at least 11 individuals in southern Lebanon, as reported by the nation’s health ministry. This incident marked the most lethal assault following a fragile truce established in June to cease hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah, even though attacks persisted.

In addition to the aerial bombardments and drone strikes, inhabitants and emergency responders in the area are leveling allegations against Israeli military units for deliberately igniting wildfires that have been devastating homes, woodlands, and olive orchards across the conflict-ridden zone.

The situation has instilled fear among the local populace regarding their ability to remain in the area and the prospects of the hundreds of thousands displaced by the conflict ever being able to come back.

Will Christou, a correspondent for The Guardian stationed in Beirut, has been providing coverage on the wildfires and the broader Israeli operations in southern Lebanon.
