Montreal’s Metro system is commemorating its 60th anniversary this year, and the city’s transit authority is inviting the public to participate in the festivities. The Société de transport de Montréal (STM) recently announced a series of events to mark this significant occasion, including a unique celebration inside a Metro train car organized by Piknic Électronik, a popular event held at Parc Jean-Drapeau.
Specific details about the celebration are anticipated to be revealed at a later date. Additionally, there are plans for musical performances and activities to take place at either the Place-des-Arts or Berri-UQAM stations in September. While some specifics are still forthcoming, it is expected that several of the city’s professional sports teams will participate in the celebrations in their distinctive ways. The Montreal Canadiens will have a presence in select Metro stations, and the Montreal Alouettes will contribute to videos showcasing the Metro network. Moreover, the Montreal airport will modify its signage to acknowledge the anniversary.
The STM is encouraging users to share their memorable “Metro moments” through submissions, similar to the one depicted in the accompanying image. The Montreal Metro system was inaugurated on October 14, 1966, during the tenure of former mayor Jean Drapeau. Over the years, it has expanded to encompass 68 stations, with the most recent additions in 2007 including three stations in Laval. Future expansions are expected in 2031 with the completion of the Blue line extension.
The upcoming extension will see the exclusive use of MR-73 trains on the Green line, as the new stations will only be compatible with the newer AZUR trains. By 2031, the MR-73 trains, introduced in 1976, will be nearly 55 years old, surpassing their original life expectancy by 15 years.
