“Royal Canadian Legion Celebrates Centennial with Free Memberships”

The Royal Canadian Legion is marking its centennial by offering complimentary memberships to new recruits joining this year. Ray Gaudet, the membership chair at Kingston Branch #30 in New Haven, P.E.I., expressed satisfaction with the initiative’s impact on his branch. Gaudet reported a notable membership increase, with 37 new members since the launch on January 1, 2026.

Jack MacIsaac, the vice-president of the Royal Canadian Legion Dominion Command, revealed that nationally, the organization has already welcomed 112,000 fresh members through the free membership program as of August 1. Prior to this initiative, the Legion’s total membership figures stood at approximately 269,000 in 2024, slightly rising to 270,000 in 2025.

At Kingston Branch #30, Gaudet highlighted the presence of a robust core of veterans within the membership. He outlined the three membership categories at the Legion: affiliates with no direct uniform connection, associates with family ties to service, and ordinary members encompassing veterans, RCMP, city police, or allied forces.

The branch remains a hub of activity, hosting events like bingo, cribbage, and darts on most evenings. In addition, the Legion’s space serves as a community hub for various programs, including open pool and hockey nights, as well as hall rentals for special occasions like weddings and birthdays.

A key focus of the free-membership initiative is to attract a more diverse demographic to the Legion. MacIsaac emphasized the shift in membership demographics, with approximately 15% of new members under 40 and 28% under 50 in 2026.

Gaudet emphasized the branch’s efforts to engage younger individuals by maintaining visibility in schools and youth programs. The Legion actively supports initiatives like sponsoring an army cadet corps, hosting the Pathfinders program, and organizing essay contests in local schools.

While the first year of membership is complimentary in 2026, both Gaudet and MacIsaac emphasized the long-term benefits of joining the Legion. Gaudet mentioned that annual dues at his branch amount to $50, which includes a magazine subscription and discounts at select businesses. New members this year receive a ballot for a national draw to win a 2027 Ford F-150 pickup truck, with an additional ballot for continuing membership the following year.

MacIsaac highlighted that over 50,000 Legion members nationwide utilize the member-perks program, offering savings on various services. However, beyond the perks, both Gaudet and MacIsaac underscored the Legion’s core mission of supporting veterans and enriching communities.
