Efforts to address the issue, including requesting a cell tower from Bell MTS, have been met with challenges as the company discontinued its 3G network, hindering the improvement of connectivity in the region.
The proximity of Waskada to the U.S. border adds complexity to the situation, with some residents resorting to American carriers for emergency communication despite having plans with Canadian providers. Mark Custance, a councillor in the neighboring Municipality of Two Borders, highlighted the necessity of dependable cellphone service for safety reasons, sharing his family’s costly arrangement with an American provider due to the unreliability of Canadian networks in the area.
While there are Canadian cell towers nearby, the lack of robust coverage in Waskada continues to be a pressing issue, impacting the daily lives and safety of residents. Bell MTS assured ongoing network enhancements for faster data speeds but acknowledged the challenges of rural wireless expansion without additional support.
