Top officials of the City of Montreal and its police force are set to hold a press briefing on Friday morning to unveil “fresh strategies to enhance public safety perceptions.” Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada and Jim Beis, in charge of public safety and prevention, will be present, along with police Chief Fady Dagher and police union leader Yves Francoeur, as per an official statement. The press event is slated for 9 a.m. This development follows Dagher’s initiative to rebuild community confidence and combat discrimination in response to allegations of racial profiling by certain officers in the city’s northern region. The accusations, involving officers in Montréal-Nord, were disclosed in June, revealing an investigation into 16 officers at Station 39 for purported racist and offensive behaviors towards Black and Arab individuals during police stops. Dagher confirmed on August 11 that three officers had been suspended, with investigations ongoing. In January, Ferrada’s administration fulfilled an electoral pledge by allocating $40 million from the initial municipal budget to outfit police personnel with body cameras. Notably, a recent Quebec coroner’s report concerning the accidental death of a 29-year-old man during a police intervention recommended the use of body cameras by officers.
