American Climber Found Dead in Broad Peak Avalanche

Search teams have located the body of Mallory Geis, an American climber who was part of a 10-member international mountaineering team that tragically perished in an avalanche on Broad Peak several weeks ago. The discovery was made by local volunteers, confirmed by Irfan Arshad Khan, the President of the Alpine Club of Pakistan. This expedition marked Geis’s first endeavor to conquer an 8,000-meter peak in Pakistan.

Originally from San Antonio, Texas, the 39-year-old Geis had shared on social media earlier this year her decision to close her Pilates studio and embark on a new adventure filled with uncertainty, hinting at the involvement of climbing gear like helmets, harnesses, and crampons.

In a statement released earlier this month, her family described Geis as a shining beacon who was deeply cherished by her loved ones and friends.

The search mission, initiated on July 31 following the avalanche that swept away the team led by renowned climber Nirmal Purja on Broad Peak, has now concluded with the recovery of Geis’s remains.

Purja, also known as Nims Dai, a former British Army soldier of Nepali origin, gained fame for scaling the world’s 14 highest peaks in a groundbreaking 189 days in 2019, a feat showcased in the Netflix documentary “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.” His record was surpassed in 2023.

Northern Pakistan’s mountainous regions are notorious for accidents during climbing expeditions due to hazards like avalanches, falling ice and rocks, high altitudes, and unpredictable weather conditions.
