Individuals experiencing these symptoms post-consuming uncooked walrus are urged to seek medical aid.
Trichinella detection is only possible through testing; hence, health authorities recommend hunters to test walrus meat before consumption to prevent potential health risks. The health department emphasizes the significance of getting meat tested as a community safety measure due to the risk of trichinella presence in any walrus. It is advisable to inquire about testing before consuming walrus obtained from others.
Notably, freezing or fermenting the meat does not eliminate the parasite, as cooking is the sole effective method for parasite eradication. The release further advises individuals handling uncooked walrus to meticulously clean and sanitize utensils and refrain from giving uncooked walrus meat to pets.
