A woman lost her life while hiking at Mount Yamnuska last week, as confirmed by authorities. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) responded to a call from Kananaskis Country on August 19 around 5 p.m. after a witness on the trail reported the hiker’s fall. Constable Sandra Geiger mentioned that the incident is under investigation, but there are no suspicions of foul play.
Emergency services from Kananaskis, Alberta conservation officers, and Alpine Helicopters were present at the scene. Despite paramedics being called at 6 p.m., they were later stood down before reaching the location, as stated by Stuart Brideaux, a spokesperson for Emergency Health Services Alberta.
This unfortunate event marks the fourth hiking-related fatality in the Banff National Park and Kananaskis Country region since June. According to trail data disclosed through an information request by CBC News, Mount Yamnuska stands out as a popular hiking destination in Kananaskis Country, with an average of approximately 43,080 hikers annually from 2022 to 2025.
The area has a history of incidents, leading to safety enhancements such as a recent trail realignment in 2020-21. Tragically, fatalities have occurred previously on Yamnuska, with another individual losing their life while climbing in 2023 and in September of the previous year.
