The International Swimming League (ISL) is set to make a comeback after a five-year break with an All-Star Match scheduled for December 19 at the London Aquatics Centre. This event marks the first step towards the league’s full revitalization. Promising a substantial prize pool, the team-based competition will showcase top swimmers from around the world, including renowned athletes like American Caeleb Dressel, Britain’s Adam Peaty, and Hungary’s Katinka Hosszu.
Last year, ISL Commissioner Ben Allen revealed plans for a revamped commercial model aimed at reducing dependency on a single investor in favor of increased sponsorship and media partnerships. Originally established in 2019 to offer a pro-level competition outside the Olympic calendar, the ISL last held a season in 2021 before being disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and financial challenges linked to its primary supporter, Ukrainian businessman Konstantin Grigorishin.
The league’s ambition includes a comeback season featuring seven matches across North America and Europe, potentially expanding to Asia and the Middle East. Consideration is also given to transitioning to a one-day event format following previous two-day competitions. In a bid to address outstanding dues from the 2021 season, ISL announced plans to pay around 300 athletes their overdue prize money earlier this year.
The upcoming London event is viewed as a test run for a streamlined approach before a broader relaunch. ISL Commissioner Ben Allen expressed excitement for the All-Star Match, highlighting London’s suitability as the host city with its world-class sporting venue and enthusiastic audience. The London Aquatics Centre, originally constructed for the 2012 Olympics, is no stranger to hosting major swimming events.
