Serena and Venus Williams have joined forces once again for the upcoming U.S. Open tennis tournament. The dynamic duo secured a wild card entry on Wednesday to compete in the doubles event, a competition they have previously conquered twice.
Serena Williams made a remarkable return to the tennis scene this summer after a hiatus of four years. The pair had initially planned to play together at Wimbledon, but Serena had to withdraw due to a knee injury sustained during her singles match. Their most recent outing was at the Cincinnati Open, where they were eliminated in the opening round.
Having clinched the U.S. Open doubles titles in 1999 and 2009, the Williams sisters boast an impressive record of 27 wins and 7 losses in their nine appearances at the tournament. Their last doubles match at the event was in 2022, which marked what was anticipated to be Serena’s final appearance at Flushing Meadows.
During the mixed doubles event on Tuesday, the 44-year-old Serena partnered with Carlos Alcaraz, winning one match before exiting in the quarterfinals. On the other hand, Venus, aged 46, is slated to compete in the women’s singles category.
The Williams siblings have a formidable history in doubles, having captured a total of 14 Grand Slam titles together and securing Olympic gold medals in 2000, 2008, and 2012. Additionally, they held the top spot in the women’s doubles rankings for a collective eight weeks.
