Political leaders in Canada are denouncing a recent executive order by U.S. President Donald Trump that seeks to rename Lake Ontario to Lake America, labeling the decision as offensive and inappropriate beyond Canadian borders. Ontario Premier Doug Ford took to a social media platform on Thursday to emphasize that the official name of the lake remains unchanged and will continue to be recognized as Lake Ontario by Canadians and globally. Similarly, Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles reiterated the sentiment in a video shared on the platform, asserting that the lake’s name remains unaltered.
Trump’s executive order to rename Lake Ontario, one of the five Great Lakes situated between Ontario and New York, drew criticism for its implications. The province of Ontario, established in 1867, derived its name from Lake Ontario. During a public address with a map displaying “Lake America” superimposed on the water body, Trump remarked on challenges in dealing with Canada, accusing the country of unfair practices and expressing a desire to treat it as a state despite its sovereign status.
The Wendat Nation strongly opposed the executive order, viewing it as an attempt to erase their historical connection to the region. Grand Chief Pierre Picard of the Wendat Nation denounced the decision in a statement on social media, describing it as an affront to their heritage and identity. Picard highlighted the significance of the name “Ontario” to their culture and criticized the renaming as a disrespectful act that undermines their heritage.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, representing the major city along Lake Ontario’s shores, rejected the legitimacy of the renaming, emphasizing that Canadian resolve remains steadfast despite Trump’s actions. Prime Minister Mark Carney also weighed in, emphasizing the longstanding history of the lake’s name, predating significant historical events in both Canada and the United States. Carney emphasized the importance of preserving the name Lake Ontario, reflecting on its heritage and permanence in Canadian identity.
