A man involved in a tragic accident on the Alaska Highway in Whitehorse last week is now facing an additional charge of impaired driving causing death. Nicolas Tselios, aged 32, had the new charge brought against him by the Crown during his recent court appearance on Thursday.
Tselios had already been charged with dangerous driving causing death following a collision between two SUVs on August 18 near the Crestview subdivision. The other driver, Dorothy John, was fatally injured in the incident.
Apart from the existing charges, Tselios is also confronted with two violations under the Yukon’s Motor Vehicles Act on the same day – one for careless driving and the other for operating a vehicle without an alcohol interlock device when mandated. This device is a safety mechanism that integrates a breathalyzer with a vehicle’s ignition system to prevent engine ignition if alcohol is detected in the driver’s breath.
Initially set as a bail hearing, Thursday’s court session saw Tselios’ legal aid lawyer informing the court that he had hired his own legal representation, necessitating a postponement of the hearing. Tselios is currently in custody, with his next court appearance slated for mid-September.
