Ontario Premier Doug Ford revealed a new sign for Lake Ontario in Winona over the weekend, in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s suggestion to rename it “Lake America” amid rising tensions and trade disputes. Ford emphasized that the name of the lake will always remain as Lake Ontario, regardless of Trump’s remarks. The sign, reading “Lake Ontario Now and Always,” was unveiled in the lakeside community near Hamilton.
The escalating tensions between Canada and the U.S. escalated after failed trade negotiations on August 21. Prime Minister Mark Carney deemed the agreement unworkable, leading to retaliatory measures by the Canadian government starting on September 8.
Trump’s initial threat to rename Lake Ontario came during a heated exchange with Ford, where insults were traded. The president signed an executive order on Thursday to change the name to “Lake America,” citing difficulties in dealing with Canada and accusing the country of unfair practices.
In response, Canadian officials expressed disbelief on social media. Carney reaffirmed that the body of water will always be known as Lake Ontario, while Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston criticized the move as “foolishness.”
Ford emphasized the importance of sovereignty and received support from governors who pledged to continue referring to the lake as Lake Ontario. He reiterated Canada’s commitment to standing up to bullying.
Lake Ontario, one of the Great Lakes situated between Ontario and New York, holds historical significance with its name derived from the Huron Indigenous people’s term “oniatarí:io,” meaning “lake of shining waters.”
Ford highlighted Ontario’s role as the economic powerhouse of Canada and expressed unity in protecting the province’s interests.
