“PEI Workers Compensation Board Seeks Input for 2027-2029 Plan”

The Workers Compensation Board of Prince Edward Island (PEI) is seeking input from workers to shape its upcoming strategic plan, which will direct the agency’s operations from 2027 to 2029. Stephen Carpenter, the senior legal advisor and spokesperson for the organization, emphasized the broad impact of the system on the island, urging active participation in the consultation process.

Covering 98% of PEI’s workforce, the WCB plays a significant role in the community, making it crucial for individuals to engage with the strategic planning process. Seeking feedback through an online survey, the WCB aims to gather insights from injured workers, employers, labor representatives, industry groups, and the general public to inform its future direction.

According to Carpenter, public feedback has influenced past decisions, demonstrating the value of community engagement in shaping the organization’s initiatives. The strategic plan serves as a dynamic roadmap rather than a static document, with tangible outcomes such as recent benefit improvements and a commitment to addressing complex injuries, including psychological harm.

Undergoing a business transformation project, the WCB is revamping its IT infrastructure and service delivery approach to enhance client experience. As part of these changes, injured workers will now have dedicated caseworkers for extended periods to streamline communication and support continuity in claims processing. Additionally, the organization is exploring ways to better accommodate pre-existing conditions in compensation eligibility criteria, recognizing the evolving demographics of the workforce.

While the WCB focuses on internal priorities, external challenges persist, particularly concerning access to healthcare and mental health services. In response, the board is innovating by establishing partnerships to secure priority access to healthcare providers and leveraging virtual care solutions to address mental health needs, addressing critical gaps in service delivery.

Looking ahead, the WCB remains attentive to shifting workplace dynamics, such as the rise of younger workers with diverse employment patterns, to adapt its services effectively. By fostering collaboration and adaptability, the organization aims to meet the evolving needs of PEI’s workforce and enhance its support mechanisms for all stakeholders.
