This marked the sixth consecutive day of attacks on the Ukrainian capital by Russia, which initiated a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The intensity of Russian air assaults against Ukraine has surged in recent months due to significant setbacks on the battlefield.
Kyiv and its neighboring areas have been relentlessly targeted by swarms of advanced drones over the past five days, resulting in casualties, destruction of residences, and warehouses. The upgraded drones, equipped with jet engines, have proven difficult to intercept. The continuous bombardment has disrupted the daily lives of millions, with prolonged air-raid alerts becoming a common occurrence.
The Foreign Minister of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, highlighted that Russian drones and ballistic missiles struck residential zones and railway infrastructure during the extensive overnight attacks. He urged Ukraine’s allies to amplify economic pressure on Russia and to explore utilizing Russia’s frozen assets abroad to support Ukraine’s defense efforts.
Fatalities and fires were reported in Kyiv, with eight people losing their lives and fires erupting in various locations, as confirmed by emergency services via the Telegram messaging app. Additionally, a total of six railway employees were killed in Russian ballistic missile strikes on a railway depot and associated facilities. In Boryspil outside Kyiv, four individuals lost their lives, and 13 others sustained injuries in an attack targeting a residential building and other sites, according to Governor Tymur Tkachenko.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy disclosed that an Indian national was among the casualties in Ukraine during the night, emphasizing a significant number of jet-powered drones and ballistic missiles were involved in the barrage. Ukraine’s air force successfully intercepted five ballistic missiles and recently received a limited supply of Patriot interceptors.
The Russian airstrikes extended to the Black Sea region of Odesa, targeting a border crossing with NATO-member Romania. These assaults have severely impacted Ukraine’s agricultural exports, leading to power outages for numerous families. Estonia reported that drones involved in a Ukrainian offensive against Russia briefly entered Estonian airspace, underscoring the vital need to bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities.
The conflict escalated as Ukraine retaliated by attacking Russian oil facilities and logistics infrastructure to undermine Moscow’s war capabilities. Fatalities were also reported in the Russian-controlled part of Luhansk region and Belgorod region bordering Ukraine. President Zelenskyy expressed optimism following a productive discussion with U.S. envoys and emphasized the ongoing efforts to schedule a visit to Ukraine. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin engaged in dialogue, acknowledging the necessity to end the conflict for the greater good of humanity.
