Residents in Holyrood have been advised to prepare for nightly water shut downs as the community addresses issues with its aging water system. Mayor Laura Crawley stated that these planned shut offs will take place from 8 p.m. NT to 5 a.m., with the specific locations of the shut offs potentially varying. The area most affected stretches from 261 Conception Bay Highway to the Conception Bay South border.
On Monday night, a scheduled shut off impacted residents in the specified area from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following day. Mayor Crawley mentioned that efforts are ongoing to address a problematic section in Holyrood, with potential interruptions expected to continue.
Additionally, a separate water interruption was announced for residents in the Northside Road vicinity, including all side streets in that area. This shut off commenced at 11 a.m. and is projected to last until 3 p.m.
Mayor Crawley attributed the challenges to the town’s aging water infrastructure, specifically a failed pump on Liam Hickey Drive that services the south side of Holyrood. A replacement pump had to be sourced from New Brunswick and has now been installed. To prevent strain on the pumps, leading to the need for the recent overnight shut off, officials are ensuring continuous water supply from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Residents can access bottled water at the Holyrood Town Office, while water trucks for household use are stationed at the Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services building at 363 Conception Bay Highway and the intersection of Conception Bay Highway and Thermal Plant Road. The town is providing updates on the situation through its website and Facebook page.
