Smith is scheduled to travel to Nashville later this week for personal reasons, but she plans to meet with important figures such as the head of the city’s chamber of commerce, state tourism commissioner Mark Ezell, and the CEO of a Nashville tourism marketing agency. She portrayed these meetings as part of her diplomatic efforts during the trade dispute while also expressing interest in exploring opportunities for Calgary to emulate Nashville’s success in the music industry.
The premier highlighted Nashville’s transformation into a music industry hub and economic powerhouse 25 years ago, expressing her desire to learn from their experiences and establish partnerships to enhance Alberta’s music industry. Additionally, Smith mentioned Alberta’s aspirations to grow its tourism sector and engage in discussions on leveraging Calgary’s assets.
Nathan Cooper, Alberta’s senior representative to the United States, is expected to participate in the meetings as well. Smith emphasized the importance of diplomatic efforts and urged Canadian officials to resume negotiations with the U.S. to avoid retaliatory tariffs set to be imposed by Ottawa in response to recent tariffs imposed by the U.S. President Donald Trump.
Trade discussions between the two countries stalled prior to the implementation of U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods, with Prime Minister Mark Carney citing discrepancies in offers and demands.
