Congregants at the Fleetwood Islamic Academy Society were shocked to find hateful messages and bacon attached to the doors and windows of the center last Saturday morning.
Asif Ali, the general secretary of the society, expressed how deeply unsettling the discovery was for worshippers, prompting them to increase security measures by hiring additional guards to patrol the premises. He underlined the emotional impact on the community, stressing the need for unity and support among Canadians.
The derogatory graffiti, including messages like “get out or die” and “Islam is trash,” was condemned by Ali, who highlighted the collective desire for peaceful coexistence and mutual care within the community. The incident was perceived as an attempt to sow discord and spread hatred among community members.
Authorities from the Surrey Police Service, in collaboration with the RCMP, are actively investigating the matter as a potential hate crime. They have released images of a suspect described as a man wearing a dark green hoodie with red letters, dark cargo pants, and red shoes with white soles, who was carrying a blue bag and driving a white four-door sedan at the time of the incident.
In response to the unsettling event, members of the Fleetwood Islamic Academy Society emphasized the importance of their place of worship as a sanctuary for families. Bilal Cheema, a regular attendee, spoke of the shock and concern felt within the community, urging people to stand against hate and support each other during these challenging times.
Cheema acknowledged that such hate-fueled acts are not limited to mosques, citing previous incidents targeting various places of worship. He called for increased awareness and acceptance among Canadians, emphasizing the value of unity and mutual respect in a diverse society.
