Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand has confirmed that one of the 30 Canadian citizens and permanent residents who went missing in the aftermath of devastating floods in Nepal’s border region with China has been located unharmed. Communication disruptions had previously hindered contact, but the individual managed to establish communication on Tuesday.
The flash floods, triggered by a glacier collapse in the Himalayan border area shared by Nepal and China, occurred a week ago, leading to widespread destruction. The natural disaster claimed the lives of over 1,100 individuals, with more than 3,900 still unaccounted for. Nepal’s Foreign Ministry reports that approximately 590 foreign nationals from 39 different countries are among the missing.
In response to the crisis, Canada is mobilizing support by dispatching over 18,000 emergency supplies from the Canadian Red Cross reserves to the affected region. This aid effort complements the $5 million humanitarian assistance pledge already made by the Canadian government to aid in the relief operations.
