According to the former board, ongoing communication with the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services had already addressed issues such as increasing costs for children with complex needs, limited residential placements in northern Ontario, and the lack of post-18 support services.
While recent ministry reviews expressed concerns about child safety and well-being, the former board has countered these claims, emphasizing their commitment to upholding responsibilities to children, youth, and families. The ministry’s intervention was also linked to alleged unauthorized decision-making on child placements and service plans, as well as financial mismanagement, including a substantial deficit increase and emergency funding requirements.
Despite the ministry’s assertions, the former board has defended its actions, highlighting efforts to control expenditures, restructure services, sell assets, and cut costs. They maintain that the ministry was kept informed of financial constraints and operational challenges, expressing readiness to collaborate with the supervisor or undergo an independent review process. The former board believes that the minister may not have been fully informed about the history of their interactions with the ministry before deciding to appoint a supervisor.
While disagreements exist regarding the conclusions drawn by the ministry, the former board’s primary focus remains on ensuring the continuity of the organization and the well-being of the children it serves.
